Jungle Boogie – Kool And The Gang

This is a monster hit from Kool And The Gang from 1973. You know the one. A Tarzan yell, grunting and shuffling. Some earthy funk. You can hear the literally hear the shapes you need to make.

For a ‘tash you have to go one degree of separation with me. Jungle Boogie was featured on the closing credits of Pulp Fiction (alongside Dick Dale’s Miserlou). Samuel L Jackson has a moustache in the film. Hey, it’s late in November and I’m struggling.

Bonus track: that Dick Dale monster (ripped up by Black Eyed Peas)

Anything in Return – Toro y Moi

Toro y Moi (Chaz Bundick) has been at the top of the synth-pop game for a while now. His sound is influenced by R&B and sometimes garage, but more the most part he stays in the indie electronic sweetspot. It’s fun, it’s catchy – you’ll like it, trust me. Jai Paul must be a jealous man.

My highlights is track 3, So Many Details – but it is a solid release taken as a whole. Fans are in luck; he’s prolific, and due a new album.

You know I’ve got your back valued reader:

Django Reinhardt

Today it is Mr. Gypsy Jazz himself, Django Reinhardt. He is credited as being one of the most influential and talented jazz musicians of all time. It is the kind of music that takes me to the banks of the Seine in the 50s. Smoky and black & white. It’s wistful and glorious.

You Can Win – Bileo

*GUEST POST*

In 1979 the stars aligned and Bill Williams, Bobby Love, Joe Fornis, Horn Arr and Maceo Jackson joined together to form Bileo, producing this absolute gem of a track. Originally released in 1979, this wonderful, massive, feel good, up-tempo, disco-funk belter somehow existed under the radar for much of the next 30 years.

There’s some debate about who gets the lion’s share of the credit for dragging this song out of the shadows and into a DJ set near you. Floating Points and Four Tet dropping it at the closing of Plastic People in 2015, MCDE during his instant classic 2014 Dekmantel set. All I know is, I’m glad it’s in my life.

My Lady – Crusaders (Purple Disco Machine Re-Edit)

Purple Disco Machine is another that can be a bit hit or miss. This one is a bona fide hit. He’s given a funky re-rub to one of Crusaders’ biggest hits from back in the 70s. Where once it was jazz fusion, now it is full of dancefloor energy and cascading piano. Enjoy.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Here is the soundtrack to Wes Anderson’s 2005 film The Life Aquatic. Just like the film, it’s zany, art-house and weird. It features David Bowie, and the talented Brazilian musician Seu Jorge prominently. If you are a fan of the film will feel very familiar indeed. Iconic.

Live in the Moment (Tycho Remixes) – Portugal. The Man

Here are a couple of nice re-imaginings of Portugal. The Man’s Live in the Moment by Tycho.  Portugal. The Man has an annoying way of writing his artist name which is going to make this post unintelligible if I refer to him too often. Anyway, he sounds a bit like Alt-J, if Alt-J wasn’t so sad. Tycho on the other hand, make blissful dream-scapey electronica which is pretty soothing and sweet. The two come together pretty nicely here.

Please keep your suggestions on artists with moustaches coming in. This post was suggested by the band Rule of Young.

Graduation – Kanye West

So much crap has been written by and about Kanye that it can be a little hard to remember why anyone should care. This album and the two before it are the answer. The man is a talent. This is a throwback to a classic 2007 album. Champion. The Glory. Flashing Lights. Homecoming. If these tracks don’t deposit you firmly in your happy late noughties happy place then there’s something wrong with you.

P.S. I know he’s really a goatee man, but Christ have you ever tried to find 30 artists with moustaches. Genuinely difficult. Can’t wait for December – got some great new music for y’all

Sylvan Esso – Sylvan Esso

Followers of the blog will know I’m a big fan of Sylvan Esso. This is the album that kicked everything off for the lovable North Carolina duo. The smoothness of their production has come on since they released this one, but in terms of raw freedom of sound, I think this release is hard to match.

Dress and Coffee are my highlights, but there aren’t really any weak tracks. Fun fact, the repeated final refrain from Uncatena (“All I want from you’s a letter and to be your distant lover. That is all that I can offer at this time”) is ripped directly from a break-up letter that singer Amelia Meath received in her teen years. Apparently the experience of having a massive crowd sing it along with her at gigs is incredibly cathartic.
