Moustaches were so. hip. in the 80s. They were so ubiquitous that today I have not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, but 5 artists to present to you. It is almost the end of the month after all!

First up, funk anthem. Sex symbols. Paragon of facial hair. Saying what you were all thinking. It’s the late, great Errol Brown as Hot Chocolate.

Next, a ‘get yo’self to the dancefloor’ number from The Brothers Johnson, Stomp!

Smoothness from Keni Burke. Just look at the fella. Old-school pimp.

Though this guy remains in relative obscurity, you’ll know this funky number from it’s samples. Ronnie Hudson and his ‘tash coming at ya.

Finally, maybe the biggest of them all, Wild Cherry, with Play That Funky Music. You know the one.

Not Lupe’s most famous, but my favourite. Kick, Push is a lovable little rap track about finding love on a skateboard. “Just a rebel looking for a place to be.” Aren’t we all Lupe. Aren’t we all.

All Along the Watchtower – Jimi Hendrix

If I could transport myself back to any concert in history, I’d go to 1969 Woodstock. Jimi Hendrix played one of the longest sets of his career and the festival itself is a part of counter-cultural folklore. There are some moments in history when music wraps itself into the social consciousness – this was one of them.

Some more old-skool rap coming at ya. 2000 is Grand Puba’s 2nd album, confusingly released in 1995. Smooth vibes. My picks from the album are Back Stabbers and I Like It (I Wanna Be Where You Are). If you recognise the latter, it’s probably because you played Tony Hawk’s Underground 2.
