Stand On the Word (Larry Levan Mix) – The Joubert Singers

This track has a confusing history; “Originally recorded in 1982 for a gospel album by the Celestial Choir, this was later remixed in 1985 by Tony Humphries, re-credited to The Joubert Singers. However, its more recent cult status was the result of a supposed Larry Levan remix, subsequently discredited, that appeared on a bootleg 12” in 2003.”

What is not confusing, is that it is a top quality hooky banger.

Everyman (Late Nite Tuff Guy Remix) – Double Exposure

Here’s one for you. It’s a late night thudding disco special coming at you from Late Nite Tuff Guy. Is anyone better at taking classics and beefing them up for the dancefloor?

For the traditionalists amongst you, here is the original from 1976. Peak disco.

And if you thought you recognised the sample from somewhere , you did. It’s a classic from 2001 by The Girl Next Door.

Supermodel (You Better Work) – RuPaul

There’s a lot being said about the UK’s drag scene these days and a lot of it seems to be coming back to the opinions of RuPaul. I don’t know if I’m super late to this or what –  I thought that RuPaul was a scenester / TV personality – it seems he is a lot more than that. Exhibit #1 this track from 1993. It’s a camp, glittery, disco anthem.

Moustaches were so. hip. in the 80s. They were so ubiquitous that today I have not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, but 5 artists to present to you. It is almost the end of the month after all!

First up, funk anthem. Sex symbols. Paragon of facial hair. Saying what you were all thinking. It’s the late, great Errol Brown as Hot Chocolate.

Next, a ‘get yo’self to the dancefloor’ number from The Brothers Johnson, Stomp!

Smoothness from Keni Burke. Just look at the fella. Old-school pimp.

Though this guy remains in relative obscurity, you’ll know this funky number from it’s samples. Ronnie Hudson and his ‘tash coming at ya.

Finally, maybe the biggest of them all, Wild Cherry, with Play That Funky Music. You know the one.

In 1979 the stars aligned and Bill Williams, Bobby Love, Joe Fornis, Horn Arr and Maceo Jackson joined together to form Bileo, producing this absolute gem of a track. Originally released in 1979, this wonderful, massive, feel good, up-tempo, disco-funk belter somehow existed under the radar for much of the next 30 years.

There’s some debate about who gets the lion’s share of the credit for dragging this song out of the shadows and into a DJ set near you. Floating Points and Four Tet dropping it at the closing of Plastic People in 2015, MCDE during his instant classic 2014 Dekmantel set. All I know is, I’m glad it’s in my life.

This guy is revered as a bit of a God in the house scene. Famous for genre-bending sets of epic proportions. DJ Harvey is London-born but now travels the world as a superstar of the scene. Highly recommend. And boy, what a moustache.
