Gondwana Records

Today sees Manchester-based record label Gondwana Records turn 10. Founded by Matthew Halsall in 2008, it has brought contemporary jazz into the mainstream in a classy way. Artists include Portico Quartet, GoGo Penguin and Mammal Hands. To celebrate they are taking over the Roundhouse for a bit of an extravaganza. Big. See you down there.

The Thief That Stole My Sad Days – Moodymann

Who doesn’t love Moodymann? Kenny Dixon Jr. has been making weird, funky house from Detroit since 1992. 1992! Anyway, here he delivers 8 minutes of blissed-out piano chords and one of those euphoric vocal samples that makes you glad to be alive.

Don’t Go Lose it Baby – Hugh Masekela

Summer might be on the way out, but keep hold of the state of mind with this afro beauty from South African funk and soul musician Hugh Masekela from 1984. Still sounds fresh.

Acidfun

It would be wrong of me to do too many posts without posting about my genre of the moment, acid house. Get into it with a playlist I created here. My highlight is Secrets & Lies by Fort Romeau – featuring a haunting sample and really nice depth.
