Best of 2021

Happy New Year HME crew. I’m looking forward to what 2022 has to offer, but before then, one final post on 2021.

I’ve started to form a bit of a theory: are personalised end of year wrap-ups a bit like dreams? Everyone finds their own fascinating and everyone else’s immensely boring…

Anyway… here are my most played tracks of the year courtesy of Spotify and Soundcloud.

Mirrors – DJ Seinfeld

After a little Summer break I’m coming back at you with a few new stellar releases over the next few days.

First up it is the wonderfully-named DJ Seinfeld with his debut full length album, Mirrors.

Mirrors is a set of tuneful electronic jams, and it comes with a sweet story attached. When DJ Seinfeld shot into the limelight out of nowhere in 2017 with his now-trademark dusty lo-fi house sounds, you might have noticed that the track names and general vibe were a tad depressing. At the time our man Armand Jakobsson was going through a break-up. Fast forward 4 years and he has found love. Out with the I Hope I Sleep Tonight and the I saw Her Kiss Him in Front of Me and I Was Like Wtf? and in with the She Loves Me, the Walking with Ur Smile and The Right Place. Ain’t that nice. Live your best life Armand.

DJ Seinfeld’s other project is also worth getting to know, under alias Rimbaudian.

Finally, he is playing live at EartH in Hackney in October – see you there.

U Already Know – DJ Seinfeld

DJ Seinfeld has announced his second full length album Mirrors will be released on Ninja Tune in September. The first single, U Already Know is out now and hints at a bit of a shift in style.

Whistful female vocals are still in, but his signature dusty style is out, in favour of punchier electro elements. If this is any indication of what the rest of the album will sound like, I’m very much there for it!

My thoughts on his debut album Time Spent Away From U here.

Piano Dream (Heaven & Earth Mix) – DJ Mountain Dad

I don’t know much (/anything) about DJ Mountain Dad, but he looks like a jolly fellow. Anyway, he (/she?) has a new release on Let’s Play House and it’s dreamy. Skip through the vacant 1 minute hard-house opening and tuck straight into the 100% good Gypsy Woman sample. Primo. Can imagine this going off at a festival somewhere.

The original for you sample-lovers:

Closing thought: this wave of electronic music producers with kind of ironic names is really fun. DJ Tennis, DJ Seinfeld, Ross From Friends, DJ Bus Replacement Service, DJ Boring… literally, what next?

Time Spent Away From U – DJ Seinfeld

Remember how I posted an EP by Rimbaudian last week? Well this album, Time Spent Away From U is by the same guy, different name. It’s his first full-length album and it’s one of my favourites from last year. Like, it’s real good. It’s all about that dusty, lo-fi house scene, like you’ve downloaded a crappy version off Limewire. Trust me, it’s nice. My pick, How U Make Me Feel, an acid beauty.

Acidfun

It would be wrong of me to do too many posts without posting about my genre of the moment, acid house. Get into it with a playlist I created here. My highlight is Secrets & Lies by Fort Romeau – featuring a haunting sample and really nice depth.

I’ll keep it updated with new acid tracks I come across, so give it a follow.

As a bonus, here is Emo, the track from 2016 that got things going for me. It’s not available on Spotify due to an apparent dispute about the original track name (Emotinium) between the artist Roy of the Ravers, and Ceephax Acid Crew
