THE BEST MUSIC: NEW & OLD
You know who makes nice music? Edmondson. Late last year he released a new EP on his own label Lissoms. Adapt2 is the highlight: its characteristically crisp, and has an undeniably deep flow to it.
Maybe even better is the We Have Love EP. Both tracks are just dripping in cool – so on point – and there’s even a cheeky Dauwd remix added in there for the bargain.
And doing a bit of back-catalogue digging, I came across one my favourite releases of a few years ago and it still sounds fresh. Props.
I don’t know how The Juan Maclean have passed me by. They were brought to me hard on Saturday by Sean Johnston & Andrew Weatherall (together, A Love From Outer Space – more on that later) and since then I’ve been hooked.
The Juan Maclean (by the way, he is actually called John Maclean, which I like) is a Brooklyn-based producer and DJ, and he’s good. Add the super-cool Nancy Whang’s vocals (of LCD Soundsystem fame) and you are onto a 12 minute clubby electro winner. If you like it, check out the album The Future Will Come for more of the same. So, Saturday. It’s 4am, the music is loud, the energy is flying and this comes on. For those of a darker persuasion. (Not too proud to admit this one is courtesy of Shazam).
A breezy new release coming at you today from XXXY. Soulful samples, glistening synths and a feelgood bouncy beat – it’s all there to assist you in gliding into the weekend.

Look, I love the Pogues as much as the next man. But you know what I also love? House music. The ‘Christmas Music’ genre isn’t laden with house bangers, so it’s great that Confidence Man has had a crack at it. It may not nudge itself onto your auntie’s playlist just yet, but hey.

It might be a formula, but the man from Bern Cyril Hahn kind of nails it with this Destiny’s Child remix. Simple, but deep and effective – I can’t help but love this one.
Bradley Zero’s Peckham-based Rhythm Section label has been nailing it over the last decade. No surprise then that they picked up two beaut Jazz/House fusion EPs from Kiwi brother-pairing Chaos in the CBD. Let their smooth brass and beats drift over you.

Lucky reader, I have 3 of the highest quality house tracks going for you today – all courtesy of KiNK. Strahil Velchev is the face of the Bulgarian electronic music scene. In my mind he is almost uniquely talented in taking massive, experimental steps in his production and yet still making music that is super listenable. No, I want to go further than that – he makes unfamiliar music that reaches out and grabs you, lifts you onto its shoulders and takes you on a wild beautiful ride. That’s what I hear anyway – let me know what you think.

Two utterly colossal tracks today from UK duo Casino Times. Both released in 2012, they are slow-building house numbers – based on yearning vocals, shimmering synths and (eventually) a warm thudding bassline.
